How to write a teacher resume

Teaching resumes serve two very different readers — a district HR screen that checks certification boxes, and a principal who wants to picture you in a classroom — and the winning resume satisfies both. For the screen: state your certification exactly (state, subject, grade band, endorsements such as ESL or special education) in its own section, because district application systems filter on those fields before a human reads anything. For the principal: replace duty statements with evidence of student growth and classroom craft. “Taught 7th-grade math” is the job; “Raised state-assessment proficiency from 54% to 71% across 130 students, with the largest gains among English learners” is the hire. Quantify what you can — class sizes, sections taught, pass rates, growth percentiles, attendance improvements in your homeroom, clubs or teams coached and what they achieved. Name your instructional approaches concretely (small-group rotations, standards-based grading, PBIS, co-teaching) rather than listing pedagogical buzzwords, and include the classroom technology you actually use. Committee work, curriculum writing, and mentoring student teachers signal the leadership trajectory principals hire for. Keep it to two pages at most, in a clean readable layout like this example — the same clarity you would demand of a student’s lab report.
