How to write a graphic designer resume
Graphic designers face a unique trap: the urge to make the resume itself the portfolio. Resist it. Heavily designed resumes — full-bleed color, custom columns, text set in graphics — routinely fail ATS parsing, and the recruiter who can’t search your skills never reaches your beautiful layout. Let the portfolio link carry the visual argument (put it prominently in your contact links, and make sure it loads fast), and let the resume prove two things the portfolio can’t: business impact and reliability. Quantify design outcomes wherever the data exists — conversion lifts from a landing-page redesign, engagement changes after a rebrand, production volume handled, turnaround times met, print budgets managed without overruns. Name your tools exactly (Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects) plus adjacent skills that expand your matches: motion, basic HTML/CSS, design systems, accessibility standards. Describe collaboration honestly — briefs taken, stakeholders aligned, developer handoffs, feedback cycles survived — since in-house hiring screens for teamwork as hard as craft. Brand work should state scope: how many assets, channels, or markets the system covered. This example uses an accent template with restrained color over a strictly linear structure: personality in the type and accents, machine-readability everywhere it counts — the same balance your own resume should strike.
